The Cost of Freedom in the Exponential Age – The War of Art
Here’s a fact of life:
You have more freedom today than all of your ancestors combined.
Extreme poverty is just one data point… If your great, great grandparents were alive to see today’s world, they wouldn’t believe their eyes.
The internet and AI have the power to create an entire generation of millionaires.
However, this freedom comes with a cost.
No one said it would be easy! But first…
What is the Exponential Age?
The Exponential Age refers to the period of rapid technological advancement and innovation that we find ourselves in today.
These advancements are so capable at transforming the economy, society, and our lives that they do not work linearly – they work exponentially. This simple fact will lead to unpredictable outcomes, many of which are literally beyond our comprehension.
While this might sound scary, this presents you with a number of opportunities. This is the meaning of the Exponential Age. In other words, the Exponential Age means freedom. But each of these new freedoms comes with an associated cost.
Here are three of our freedoms and the prices we pay for them:
1. You can learn anything you want
Google, TikTok, and YouTube has changed education forever. Social media and search engines allows you to study any topic in the world for free. We have access to all of humanity’s information at the tips of our fingers.
It’s never been easier to find and pursue our passions.
The price we pay for education is distraction. The internet is filled with useless content, designed to veer us off course. You must resist temptation and stay focused.
2. It’s easier than ever to start a business
The internet enables anyone to incorporate, build a product, market and sell to an infinite market, and more. No-code tools, agencies, and emerging AI technologies are changing the world of business. This has created a lower barrier to entry.
The price we pay for a lower barrier to entry is competition. It’s easier for us to start a business, but it’s also easier for everyone else. Your must work harder than everyone else. You must truly want it.
You will win if you focus on what’s important.
3. You are connected with virtually everyone in the world
On Twitter alone, you can have a conversation with celebrities, entrepreneurs and role models. You have access to connect with more people than all of your ancestors combined.
The price we pay for connection is overstimulation. Social media stretches our relationships to surface-level. You must put in effort to maintain deep relationships.
Unfortunately, freedom scares most people into inaction, depression, and fear. And it’s no surprise. Living with infinite possibilities in front of us is hard.
Instead of embracing freedom, many people retreat to the known and the comfortable. To dogmatic beliefs, to mindless scrolling, and to victim mentality.
Lean in. Enjoy your freedoms. And live true to your calling.
“If you’re paralyzed with fear, it’s a good sign. It shows you what you have to do.”
I promise you – everything in your life will get better.
The Key Takeaway
The internet, AI, Bitcoin, social media… there’s no denying that the world is changing fast.
You can either let it overwhelm you, or you can grab these new opportunities by the horns.
The choice is yours.
